Pierce Jewelers has one of the few Accredited American Gem Society Labs and Certified Gemologist appraisers in the state of Indiana. Pierce Jewelers is dedicated to setting, maintaining, and promoting the highest standards through education, gemological standards, and gemological research.
Using our accredited Gem Lab, along with our Certified Gemologist Appraiser, we will carefully identify, grade, research, and evaluate your jewelry. Pierce Jewelers will guide and navigate you through the appraisal process. Our Pierce Jewelers Appraiser: Charles Scanlan is one of Pierce Jewelers co-owners and has been in the jewelry industry for 48 years and has been a Certified Gemologist Appraiser for the past 32 years, with the following titles.
- Graduate Gemologist Degree, (GG) from the Gemological Institute of America in Santa Monica, CA
- Registered Jeweler, (RJ) from the American Gem Sociery
- Certified Gemologist, (CG) from the American Gem Society
- Certified Gemologist, (CGA) from the American Gem Society, and tested every year to attain the prestigious CGA title


INTRODUCTION TO THE DIFFERENT PROCESSES:
Although the appraisal process may seem difficult at first, Pierce Jewelers will walk you through the many different steps to get your jewelry appraised. Our methodical take-in questions will help you understand and evaluate what you are wanting to accomplish.
- INSURANCE COVERAGE: In the event of loss, theft, or damage, and appraisal provides the necessary documentation to ensure that your jewelry is adequately covered by insurance, which helps facilitate a smoother claims process
- ESTATE PLANNING: If you plan to include your jewelry in your estate or you plan to sell your jewelry as part of the estate, an updated appraisal or a fair market value appraisal can be crucial to reflect the current market value of your jewelry items to help settle for estate planning, tax purposes, or distribution among heirs, with consideration to historical context, provenance, an market trends.
- FAIR MARKET VALUE: The value of a piece of jewelry if it were to be sold in the current market. This is what the willing buyer and the willing seller are willing to accept after considering the factors such as demand, condition, and comparable sales.
- LIQUIDATION: This focuses on determining the value of a quick sale. It is usually at an auction or from a dealer, which tend to reflect a lower value than a fair market value or an insurance.
- DAMAGE: This helps with assess the extent of the damage of the an item. It also helps determine the costs of the repairs, examples such as fire of flood.
- DISSOLUTION OF MARRIAGE: The values established for legal proceedings in a court of law

Upon the take-in appraisal evaluation, we will provide you with an estimate and a completion date. There may be times when Pierce Jewelers may need to take the item or items in for further evaluation, but no work will be done until you receive an estimate and time frame.
Pierce Jewelers will provide you with two copies of the appraisal for each item you had appraised. With the right guidance and the right knowledge, Pierce Jewelers will navigate the complexity of having your jewelry appraised with confidence. This will safeguard your investments, and help you preserve all of the cherished memories your jewelry expresses for years to come.
